Explore Your Interests
Do you know what a management consultant does? An epidemiologist? An urban planner ? A paralegal? A curator? An actuary? Are you curious about careers that match your interests and skills? Career Cruising’s Matchmaker and My Skills assessment is a great place to start. This self-guided tool takes approximately 30 minutes and provides a list of careers aligned with your responses. Each career description includes interviews with practicing professionals, required education and training, expected earnings, sample career paths and links to related careers.
Another online tool is My Next Move. This is the government database on occupational trends – O*NET – and includes information about projected growth, green industries, salaries, skills, work tasks and educational requirements. You can use My Next Move to search careers, industries or interests.
Learn About Job Functions
If you are uncertain about the specific job function that might be well-suited to your interests and ability, spend 15 minutes with Pymetrics. Pymetrics is a free career exploration tool that leverages neuroscience-based games to suggest career options that may be well-suited to your abilities. The exercises are fun and challenging. The career report highlights skillsets that large corporate employers have indicated are predictors of success in various job functions (including consulting and finance.) The report is primarily focused on the corporate world, but may also provide insight into other career options that leverage similar skills.
Understand Your Personal Strengths
Type Coach is an online Personality Type tool for students to help increase awareness about their who they area as it relates to work. Based on the same theory of personality preferences as the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Type Coach Verifier enables you to verify the Type that most closely reflects how you prefer to live. It takes less than 30 minutes to complete. You can print off a 5 page report that highlights your strengths, areas of challenge, causes of stress and opportunities where your Type often excels. There are also Coaching Videos for each Type focused on ways to leverage your personality preferences at work, and a Type-to-Type tool for understanding how to effectively work with people of different Types.
Type Coach is primarily for seniors, but undergraduates may request access. Please contact a career advisor if interested to be given login and password information. The link to Type Coach is on the Optimal Resume home page.
