Some of these offerings are broader than others, encompassing a wide range of focus areas, career sectors, and development programs, while others are very specifically focused toward particular industries and skill sets.
The sampling of opportunities listed in the “In Depth” tab of this page specifically focus on opportunities for students from underrepresented groups. Don’t limit your search to these resources, however, as there are many more opportunities available out there.

Athena Collaborative Group
The Athena Collaborative Group offers a highly competitive program where women are recruited as candidates for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers. The Athena Collaborative Group specifically looks to recruit, mentor and develop female college students to become leaders in Investment Banking and IT careers.
Specialty: The Athena Collaborative Group specifically targets highly talented STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) students looking to pursue careers in investment banking, business, or in IT. In addition to helping students break in to “STEM” careers, it also looks to help cultivate them as business leaders in these industries.
INROADS is a national non-profit looking to develop and place talented underserved minorities in business and industry. INROADS works with top companies to help secure a paid multi-year internship in order to help prepare interns for corporate and community leadership.
Basic Requirements: INROADS is open to college underclassmen and entering college freshmen who have a career interest in business, engineering, computers and information sciences, retail store management, sales, health, or marketing.
In addition, students must have at least a 3.0 college GPA and at least 1 summer or 27 credit hours remaining before graduating college (i.e., Rising college sophomores and rising college juniors). The application deadline is usually the end of March.
Minority Access Internship Program
The Minority Access Internship Program is designed to allow talented undergraduate and graduate students experience the diversity and scope of career opportunities available in the federal government and other participating entities. The program provides students with the opportunity to merge academic theory with practical application in the workplace. Minority Access interns receive pre-employment training, expert counseling on career choices, financial management and professional development, and recognition for fulfilling the requirements of the program. The Minority Access Internship Program staff is available at all times to lend assistance to the interns. Full-time internships are available in the summer, and full-time and part-time internships are available in the spring and fall semesters. All internships are paid positions and most include round-trip travel.
National Organization for Women (NOW)
NOW, the largest feminist organization in the United States was founded in 1966 to end the injustice and inequality women face daily. NOW offers full-time and part-time unpaid internships throughout the year for undergraduate and graduate students. Prospective interns should be hard working, enthusiastic, and flexible individuals who possess or seek a working knowledge of women’s issues and feminist organizing. Interns should also be committed to continuing the struggle for equality and justice once they leave the internship program and return to their campuses and communities. As interns with the National NOW Action Center, students will be in the front lines of the women’s rights movement.
National Partnership for Women and Families
The National Partnership for Women and Families is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that uses public education and advocacy to promote fairness in the workplace, quality health care, and policies that help women and men meet the dual demands of work and family. The National Partnership invites bright, energetic women and men who are passionate about our issues to apply for internships. This is an opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals, to work inside the advocacy/public policy community, and to advance issues that have a direct impact on women and families nationwide. Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO)
SEO provides superior educational and career programs to young people from underserved communities to maximize their opportunities for college and career success. Student interns can be placed within companies in the corporate, banking, corporate law, or the non-profit sector. SEO provides mentorship and training for students throughout their internship experiences and works to ensure that students can get job offers from the companies and organizations they intern with over the summer. SEO also provides students with stipends ranging from $700-$1300, entry level professional pay, for the career field students have chosen.
Basic Requirements: Have at least a 3.0 GPA; Attend an accredited 4 year university
SEO is open to students of all majors who are sophomores to seniors and are American citizens. SEO also offers some internship opportunities for international students who have F-1 Visas. SEO does have specific requirements and restrictions based on the program you plan to apply for, particularly for more technical positions. Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT)
Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) is the premier career development institution that equips high potential African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans with the key ingredients—skills, coaching and door-opening relationships—that unlock their potential. By cracking the code on career potential, MLT is developing the next generation of minority leaders, for the corporate, non-profit and entrepreneurial sectors.
Specialty: MLT offers constant mentoring, one-on-one career coaching, in addition to internship placements for underrepresented minority students interested in careers in business or non-profits. Accepted interns are required to attend four weekend seminars throughout the course of the year to complement their internship.
Application Requirements: There are several application requirements for interested applicants: U.S citizenship or permanent legal residence; Identification as Black, Hispanic, Native American or a combination; Professional goals that align with Career Prep’s programming; Ability to do monthly assignments and participate in in-person workshops; Have at least a 3.0 GPA
New America Alliance
New America Alliance is an organization of American Latino business leaders united to promote the economic advancement of the American Latino community, with a focus on economic and political empowerment and public advocacy to improve the quality of life in the United States. Each spring, fall and summer, New America Alliance offers internship positions for dedicated college students or recent graduates to assist on its economic and political capital agenda, its philanthropy and human capital initiatives, and in the areas of membership and marketing. Interns work a minimum of 32 hours per week and receive a monthly stipend.
United Negro College Fund Scholars Programs
UNCF Corporate Scholars Programs help college students gain invaluable professional experience through paid internships at America’s leading Fortune 500 corporations and national organizations. Students also receive up to a $10,000 scholarship. Many of the internships are renewable. The ultimate goal of the program is to ensure that successful corporations have a ready pool of well-trained, ethnically diverse young professionals who can create the products and efficiencies companies need to compete in the dynamic, globally integrated marketplace of today. The Getty Museum
The Getty offers graduate internships as well as multicultural undergraduate internships at the Getty Center. In addition, the Getty supports multicultural internships at Los Angeles area museums and visual arts organizations.
The Smithsonian Minority Awards Program
The Smithsonian offers internships for minority students to do hands-on research in the museum field. Stipend awards are available for interns to participate in supervised on-going research or museum-related activities for periods of 10 weeks. Usually internships run for a ten-week period during the summer. For applications and further information on internships and fellowships refer to the website.
The Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study
The Office of Fellowships offers a number of opportunities to increase participation of minority groups who are underrepresented in the Smithsonian scholarly program in the disciplines of research conducted at the Institution and in the museum field. Stipend awards are available for interns to participate in supervised on-going research or museum-related activities for periods of 10 weeks. The Strong National Museum of Play
The Strong invites undergraduate and graduate college students from diverse backgrounds with an interest in a career in the museum field, to take part in the museum’s Diversity Internship Program. The Strong, located in Rochester, NY, is a highly interactive, collections-based museum devoted to the history and exploration of play. It is one of the largest history museums in the United States and one of the leading museums serving families and children.
The Diversity Internship Program was created to provide meaningful work experiences for students from diverse backgrounds, especially those who may be interested in a career in the museum profession. Undergraduate students interested in participating in the program must have completed at least one full year of college. Depending upon the availability of projects, interns may choose to focus on a particular area in the museum such as administration, collections, education, exhibits, marketing, or guest services, or interns may opt for a combination of areas for a broader experience.
Minority Advertising Internship Program
MAIP has helped jumpstart the careers of more than 2,600 Asian/Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Multiracial and Multiethnic aspiring advertising professionals. Each year, undergraduate and graduate students are selected for a 10-week paid summer internship at a 4A’s member advertising agency. Students gain practical work experience, establish key industry contacts, and perhaps most importantly, become better prepared to land a full-time job in advertising when they graduate. At the same time, the program gives advertising agencies a cost-effective way to identify and recruit talented multicultural students.
Upon completion of the program, interns become members of the MAIP Alumni Association, a close-knit family of over 2,600 MAIP graduates that fosters the development of future MAIP interns as well as the professional development of the program’s alumni.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science: Minority Science Writers Internship
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Pitts Family Foundation is proud to offer a summer internship program for minority students interested in journalism as a career and who want to learn about science writing. Experience what it’s like to cover the scientific and technological issues that shape our global community. The Internship takes place at the Washington, D.C. headquarters of AAAS’s Science magazine, the largest interdisciplinary journal in the world.
The program is a paid, 10-week experience under the guidance of the weekly magazine’s award-winning staff of professional science writers and editors.
Black Enterprise Magazine Internships
Black Enterprise Internships are designed to provide real-life work experiences for college students interested in a career in the media industry. College students who are juniors, seniors, or in graduate school may apply.
Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above in order to be eligible. They must also have a strong desire to work within the media industry. The internships are unpaid. You might consider applying for a Career Planning Funded Internship grant. Applicants interested in working in the editorial department must have excellent writing skills. In addition to an application, they will be required to submit samples of their written work. All students applying must include a cover letter and resume as well.
Essence Communications Inc. Summer Internship Program
Essence hosts summer interns through the Time Inc. Summer Internship Program. The program is a 9-week paid learning experience where you’ll receive on-the-job training that will enhance your education and prepare you for a future career in the media industry. You must have an interest in media and issues related to African-American women to intern at ESSENCE. They are looking for students who are professional, self-motivated and extremely detail-oriented to take on various opportunities throughout departments in both the Publishing and Editorial divisions. If you are currently an undergraduate or graduate student, then you are eligible to apply for an Editorial or Publishing internship at Time Inc. Summer internships.
The Fund for American States – Institute on Political Journalism
For approximately thirty-six hours a week, you will intern in a Washington media organization. Sponsors include print and broadcast media outlets news services, internet publications and PR firms. The IPJ staff will match you with an internship that best meets your interests and level of skill. Students who plan on seeking a broadcast journalism internship are encouraged to apply early, as these internships are very competitive and need to be secured in early spring. Intern responsibilities vary, but often include covering congressional hearings, drafting articles for publication, editing and producing news stories, researching, writing press releases, assisting with media relations, and general administrative office work. The Institute selects many of the best undergraduate journalism students in the country to attend this Institute each summer, where they attend classes in economics, ethics, and leadership and also serve in internships in major news organizations. Participants also attend regular briefings at principal news sites such as Congress, the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon. Students are enrolled at Georgetown University, live in a furnished apartment on campus in the center of D.C., and are placed in a competitive internship for eight weeks. Each summer, 85 students from across the country are selected. The total cost of the program is between $5,000 and $6,000, but scholarships are available.
International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF)
Full-time, unpaid internships are available for undergraduate and graduate women who would like to be involved in journalism. The four areas in which internships are available are: fundraising/development, research, communications, fellowships/program.
National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ)
The NABJ offers an internship in conjunction with NBC, with experience at their premiere shows. Interns will get hands-on experience at the news outlets, in writing, editing, and much more.
Newhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship for Minorities
The Newhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship for Minorities is a highly competitive 18-month program that provides two generous awards each year to minority students who have majored in subjects other than journalism as undergraduates. It is supported by the Newhouse Foundation, a private foundation established by Samuel I. Newhouse. The winners study in the Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism master’s program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Additionally, students receive professional, on-the-job training. While attending classes, students work as part-time reporting interns at Syracuse Media Group. Fellows receive full tuition scholarships, $1,400-per-month stipends, health insurance coverage, up to $1,500 to cover moving expenses to Syracuse, up to $800 for travel to professional conferences and up to $1,000 for books, fees and other academic expenses.
Black Entertainment Television Networks (BETN) Internship Program
BET Networks is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment. BETN markets its Internship program year-round to many college, universities and external partner organizations, representing diverse communities nationwide.

Brooklyn Workforce Innovations “Made in NY” PA Training Program
The “Made in NY” Production Assistant Training Program is a free five week nonprofit training program, taught by industry professionals, and followed by two years of job placement. No previous production experience is required. This program is specifically funded to help individuals from low-income backgrounds who do not have access to and/or significant experience in this industry.
The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) Young Leaders Fellowship
The CAPE Young Leaders Fellowship is an incubator to equip the next generation of media executives to break into the VP ranks. It is our new signature program to develop leaders in all areas of media. The Fellowship will be run by senior members of CAPE’s Board of Directors, and will feature high level speakers, as well as hands-on break out sessions to train participants in the art of interviewing, leadership, and pitching, among other skills. The Fellowship is crucial to developing the next generation of AAPI executives.
CBS Writers Mentoring Program
CBS offers a six-month Writers Mentoring Program to provide access and opportunities for talented and motivated diverse writers. The goal of the program is to positively impact the presence of diverse writers throughout the industry. Aspiring diverse writers with a strong desire to write for CBS television series are encouraged to apply. You must be 21 or older to be eligible.
Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Assistant Director Training Program
The New York Assistant Director Training Program is designed to provide opportunities for a limited number of individuals to become Assistant Directors in Film, Film Television & Commercial production. This is a two year program consisting of up to 350 days of on-the-job training combined with seminars and special assignments.
Disney/ABC Writing Program
Disney/ABC offers a one-year writing program to applicants 21 years of age and above. From self-branding to creating new writing samples, the goal is to present Disney│ABC Television Group (DATG) executives and producers with viable writing candidates who will make invaluable contributions in a writers’ room.
Emma Bowen Foundation – Internships for Minorities in Media
The Foundation was created in 1989 to prepare minority youth for careers in the media industry. The Foundation’s program is unlike traditional intern programs in that students work for partner companies during summers and school breaks from the summer following their senior year in high school until they graduate from college. During the four-year program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full-time employment upon completion of their college degrees.
Students earn an hourly salary and matching scholarship funds for college expenses. Academic excellence is also a key component of the program—students are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to remain in good standing. The Foundation staff works closely with corporate partners to monitor each student’s academic and work progress. An annual summer conference, a mentoring program and a technical program are also provided to further enhance the student’s knowledge and experience. Resource guides for both students and corporate supervisors are provided to maximize the student’s experience and productivity while in the program.
This unique, multi-year program prepares a diverse group of talented young professionals to enter the workforce with specific job-related skills, knowledge of the corporate environment and a strong foundation for future advancement. Students work in a variety of functional areas (e.g., marketing, sales, finance, public relations, production, operations, human resources, technology, news, web design, promotion, etc.) and rotate each summer. Currently, they have more than 260 active students nationwide and 550 graduates. Approximately 60-70 new students join the program each year.
Film Independent – Project Involve
Project Involve is a free, intensive, nine-month annual program that offers 30 up-and-coming film professionals from under-represented communities the opportunity to hone skills, form creative partnerships, utilize free or low-cost production resources and ultimately gain the industry access necessary to succeed as working artists. Project Involve accepts applications from any rising film professional who is able to demonstrate some proficiency and experience in their given discipline or focus.
HBOAccess Writing Fellowship
The HBOAccess Writing Fellowship provides mentorship for up to eight diverse, emerging storytellers. Following a one-week intensive of master classes, participants are immersed in eight months of mentoring by HBO creative executives, as each participant develops a script suitable for HBO or Cinemax.
The Humanitas Prize: New Voices Program
The Humanitas Prize offers any new or emerging writer, represented or unrepresented with a body of work, a $15,000 grant to write an original pilot under the supervision of a showrunner/mentor. Mentors are HUMANITAS Trustee or members of the Board of Directors. Once completed, the script will be submitted to a studio partner for consideration.
International Radio & Television Society – Multicultural Career Workshop
Now in its 31st year, the IRTS Multicultural Career Workshop is a two-day conference that continues to be singled out by human resource professionals as one of the best places to find skilled students and recent graduates for job and internship opportunities. Attendees will learn about opportunities in digital media, creative production, advertising, research, sales and marketing, while attending a full day of seminars during the Workshop’s first day. Students will then have the chance to meet with human resource professionals from major media companies during the Workshop’s career fair on day two.
International Radio & Television Society – Summer Fellowship Program
The Summer Fellowship Program, the most notable student out-reach effort of IRTS, teaches up-and-coming communicators the realities of the business world through an expense-paid fellowship, which includes practical experience and career-planning advice. Each year college juniors, seniors and graduate students are selected nationwide to participate in the nine-week Summer Fellowship Program.
International Radio & Television Society – Broadcast Sales Associate Program
Devoted to increasing diversity in the media and entertainment industry, the IRTS Foundation seeks outstanding minority students in their senior year or graduate school to participate in a nine-week summer sales training program. Sales Associates have an exclusive opportunity to participate in a sales training program traditionally reserved for actual station group employees.
Held in tandem with the prestigious IRTS Summer Fellowship Program, the Broadcast Sales Associate Program is a diversity initiative designed to give graduating seniors a jumpstart on the television and radio management track.
National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) TV Writer’s Program
The NHMC Television Writers Program was created in 2003 and is an intensive scriptwriters workshop that prepares Latinos for writing jobs at major television networks. Modeled after the previously successful Hispanic Film Project, the program is a direct response to the lack of diverse writers in primetime network TV.
NBCUniversal Late Night Writer’s Workshop
The NBCUniversal Late Night Writers Workshop is a multi-day program focused on exposing talented sketch and comedy writers to NBCUniversal’s late night & alternative line-up and readying them for a staff writer position. We are looking for writers who are “almost there,” but need that final bit of preparation and exposure to key industry players. We particularly encourage female writers and those of diverse backgrounds to apply. The selected writers will create new sketch material and gain insight into the dynamics of a late night writers’ room. Participants are given the chance to interact with key writers and producers from across NBCUniversal’s late night and alternative shows, as well as receive feedback on their material.
NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship
This scholarship has been named in honor of Tony Coelho, a former United States Representative from California and the primary author and sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Any 2nd year associate’s degree student; undergraduate sophomore, junior, or senior; or graduate student who self-identifies as an individual with any type of disability and is pursuing a communications or media related degree is invited to apply. Each recipient will receive $5,625 for tuition and fees at their college or university.
NBCUniversal Universal Pictures’ Emerging Writer’s Fellowship
Universal Pictures offers a one-year fellowship designed to identify and cultivate new and unique voices with a passion for storytelling. They are looking for talented screenwriters who have the potential to thrive, but don’t have access to or visibility within the industry.
NBC Writers on the Verge Program
Writers on the Verge is a 12-week program focused on polishing writers and readying them for a staff writer position on a television series. The program looks for writers who are “almost there” but need that final bit of preparation with their writing and personal presentation skills. Writers of diverse backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply.
Outfest Screenwriting Lab
Outfest Screenwriting Lab is a dynamic three-day, mentor-led workshop in Los Angeles for selected LGBT screenwriters. The authors of five screenplays will be invited to participate in an intensive laboratory during which they will work closely with Lab Mentors — established writers who will critique and encourage their work.
Streetlights Production Assistant (PA) Training
Streetlights offers a one-month training program, four times a year, for aspiring production assistants to low-income, minority applicants 20 years and above. Streetlights mission is to assist talented and motivated young adult minorities, many economically and socially disadvantaged, to achieve long term economic stability and career success.
The T. Howard Foundation
The T. Howard Foundation is much more than an internship program for minority students interested in the media and entertainment industry.
In addition to a full-time paid summer internship, the Foundation’s comprehensive approach to diversity also provides talented interns with networking opportunities, professional development training, scholarships, mentors and much more! The Warner Brothers Writer’s Workshop offers a six-month program every year that selects up to 10 participants, out of almost 2,000 submissions, and exposes them to Warner Bros. Television’s top writers and executives, all with the ultimate goal of earning them a staff position on a Warner Bros. produced television show.

League of United Latin American Citizens, National Internships in Washington, DC
Looking for a meaningful way to serve the Latino community? The League of United Latin American Citizens, the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, seeks several talented and passionate interns to work for the LULAC national headquarters in Washington D.C. In the communications field you can pursue internships in communications, corporate relations, and special events.
Coro Kansas City – Summer Internship in Public Affairs
The Summer Internship in media is a full-time, ten-week summer program, whose purpose is to develop future community leaders through exposure to community issues, skill development, civic leaders and organizations. The program is demanding, full-time, and requires an interest in public affairs. Each intern is assigned a brief, individual internship in business, government, labor, media, or non-profit organizations. Preferential consideration is given to applicants from the Greater Kansas City area or to those who intend to include Kansas City in their future plans. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply. Twelve interns are selected every summer. Interns receive a stipend.
Diversity in Publishing Internship – LEE & LOW BOOKS
In response to the lack of diversity among publishing professionals, LEE & LOW BOOKS has established the Diversity in Publishing Internship for students from diverse backgrounds. Interns will provide support primarily for the Marketing & Publicity department but may work on cross-departmental projects as well. Interns will learn what it takes to market and publicize books, create and discover niche markets, and spread the word about our unique mission to publish children’s books that all children can enjoy. In a small company you will gain a wide exposure to the world of independent publishing for children.
The WNDB Internship Program
We Need Diverse Books created the WNDB Internship Program, providing grants to students from diverse backgrounds (people of color, people with disabilities, people from the LGBTQIA+ community, and other underrepresented groups) who wish to pursue a career in the publishing industry, specifically in children’s literature.
National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) – Diversity Internship Program
The NASCAR Diversity Internship Program will employ college/university students in a ten-week summer program designed to introduce them to the world of NASCAR and the exciting career opportunities available throughout the motorsports industry. The Program is designed to support deserving students with an interest in the motorsports industry, who are of Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Island, African American, Hispanic, or of other racial minority descent. The internships are nationwide in several industry fields, including broadcasting, sales, and sports marketing. In addition to a salary, interns receive a monthly housing stipend.
National Basketball Association – NBA Internship Program
Their Summer Internship Program is a hands-on opportunity for enrolled college students to build their work experience and learn the behind-the-scenes operations of the NBA League Office. Over the 10-week program, summer interns participate in a series of events and activities exposing them to the many facets of the NBA’s business, including the WNBA and NBA D-League.
Applicant placement within an NBA Department is based on the NBA’s business needs, as well as the candidate’s interest, experience, and academic achievement. All positions are located at the NBA League Offices in either New York City (midtown Manhattan) or Secaucus, New Jersey.
National Basketball Association – NBA Associates Program
This eight to 12-month training Program places recent college graduates in a rotational program at the NBA, where they are exposed to a wide range of business activities. Associates are provided with comprehensive personal development training, with the goal of helping them become even larger contributors to the organization after completing the Program.
Participants are placed within the organization based on experience, academics, extra-curricular activities and the NBA’s business needs. All positions are located at the NBA League Offices in either New York City (midtown Manhattan) or Secaucus, New Jersey. The application process is very competitive, and typically 8-10 Associates are hired each year.
NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship
NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship offers an opportunity for a minority, female college student to be chosen for a unique two-year internship program. The program will focus primarily on compliance, athletic communications and special events for The Rensselaer Athletics Department and its intercollegiate varsity programs.
This internship is for a student who has experience in communications and media relations in a sports environment. Harvard Business School – Summer Venture in Management Program (SVMP)
The Summer Venture in Management Program, a week-long program at the Harvard Business School, is designed to expose talented minority college students to general management in the business world. Using the renowned case method of instruction, HBS faculty lead class discussions on current management issues. Participants spend evenings analyzing real-business cases, and use morning study groups and classes to examine and debate their ideas through lively interaction with peers and faculty. This is the life of an MBA student at HBS. Aspen Institute – William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship for Minority Students
The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund, a grant-making program of the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC, annually offers the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship. The Hearst Scholar serves as a summer intern with the Fund, assisting with general research and program support for the Fund’s grant-making and outreach efforts. Through this program, the Fund seeks to introduce a diverse group of students to issues relating to philanthropy, voluntarism, and nonprofit organizations. Interns receive scholarship (ranging between $2,500- $5,000), which is based on academic excellence and need. Both undergraduate and graduate minority students are eligible to apply.
Center for Third World Organizing – Movement Activist Apprenticeship Program
For the past 20 years, MAAP has been the movement’s flagship organizer-training program for people of color. MAAP is centered around an intense six-week field placement with a grassroots community or labor organization, working on issues that impact poor people of color. MAAP interns gain experience using CRAFT: Contact work, Research skills, Actions, Fundraising, and Teamwork. Since 1985, the program has trained more than 300 organizers, many of whom currently hold positions of responsibility with social-justice organizations around the country.
FHI is a human development organization, dedicated to improving lives with a local perspective. They work with family planning, STDs, HIV/AIDS and malaria prevention, to name a few.
League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
The League of United Latin American Citizens, this country’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, seeks several highly talented and dedicated interns for our national office in Washington D.C. Interns can choose to work with our policy, communications, membership, events, development, education, fiscal or executive departments. The positions are unpaid and without stipends. LULAC interns are engaged in a number of hands- on activities which vary depending upon the division of LULAC they choose to work with. We rely heavily on our interns to help us carry out the important work of LULAC to advance the cause of Hispanic Americans in the United States. Applicants are required to have excellent academic records and strong writing and communication skills. Thorough knowledge of the Hispanic community and current issues is a plus. Applicants should also have a deep sense of commitment to advancing the rights of Hispanic Americans. Ability to write and speak Spanish and English fluently is highly desirable as is extensive experience with using computers.
MANA Internship Program
MANA, a National Latina Organization, is a national membership organization that empowers Latinas through leadership development and community action. Through the support of General Motors and the Verizon Foundation, MANA is able to provide small stipends to summer interns at the Chapter level and the National level. High school and college Latina students will be able to intern at one of the organization’s chapters or at the national office in Washington, DC, supporting MANA community programs, especially the Hermanitas Program. Students will acquire valuable skills and networking opportunities that will help them in their future careers. National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) – Nathan J. Stark Internship for Non-Profit Development
The Nathan J. Stark Internship for Non-Profit Development will provide two students with the opportunity to learn about non-profit boards and fundraising. Students will be based at the National Academy of Social Insurance or a similar not-for-profit organization such as the National Health Policy Forum or the Association for Academic Health Centers. Each summer, two students or individuals interested in a career in the non-profit sector will be awarded the internship based on national recruitment and a competitive selection process. The students will come to Washington, DC, for thirteen weeks between May and August, depending on their schedule. The internship includes an honorarium and the opportunity to participate in a series of seminars and projects.
National Hispana Leadership Institute – Latinas Learning to Lead Summer Youth Institute
The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) Latinas Learning to Lead Summer Youth Institute’s main purpose is to train the next generation of Latina leaders. It combines leadership training with technical and practical experience in a one-week comprehensive program in Washington, DC. The Institute focuses on personal and career planning, health and wellbeing, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with high-level Latina/o leaders during lectures, group exercises, and site visits. Young Latinas between the ages of 17 and 22 who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program are eligible to apply. Requirements include a 2.5 GPA, demonstrated leadership, and a strong commitment to Latina/o issues. Up to 20 Latina undergraduate college students from diverse geographical areas and ethnic subgroups within the Hispanic community will be selected each year. NHLI will cover airfare, room and board, and all classroom materials needed for the program.

Political Research Associates (PRA)
Political Research Associates is an independent non-profit center that serves as a national resource on the U.S. political right. PRA collects and analyzes information on anti-democratic, authoritarian, and racist movements and trends, and publishes material that explain the ideologies, strategies, and funding of these movements and the links to each other. PRA offers internships for summer and fall semesters. Intern responsibilities include researching and writing for PRA publications, proof-reading and fact-checking, updating and maintaining PRA’s Website, and working with the Development Director on various components of the outreach campaign to increase PRA’s visibility. A stipend may be available for summer interns.
Student Action With Farmworkers (SAF) – Into the Fields Internship
Into the Fields is a ten-week internship and leadership development program that creates opportunities for college students to work for fairness in the agricultural industries. Through the Into the Fields Program, college students from diverse backgrounds work full-time with farmworkers to promote greater respect and justice for the people who supply food for our tables. Each summer, 30 students work in migrant education programs, rural health clinics, legal services, immigrant assistance organizations, policy and research groups, and with community and labor organizing projects in North and South Carolina. Interns provide health education to farmworkers, develop leadership programs for migrant teens, promote workplace safety and pesticide education, teach English as a second language, educate farmworkers about their legal rights, and organize workers into labor unions. Interns receive on-going training, furnished housing, a stipend, and a post-service scholarship.

The Brookings Institution
The Brookings Institution, a private, independent, non-profit research organization, seeks to improve the performance of American institutions, the effectiveness of government programs, and the quality of U.S. public policies. The Brookings Institution offers full-time and part-time unpaid internships to undergraduate and graduate students to provide them with the opportunity to work in a professional research organization which studies a wide variety of public policy issues. CBCF Congressional Internship Program
Description: Established in 1986, the CBCF Congressional Internship Program answered the call to help diversify our democracy by increasing the pool of talented public servants. This intensive nine-week summer program offers the opportunity for college students from across the nation to learn about the legislative process, leadership, and careers in the policy-making process. Interns work in CBC member offices, attend professional development events, and participate in leadership development projects. The program prepares young people to become informed decision makers and influential leaders who shape our world.
Benefits: Interns will receive a $3,000 stipend and housing at a local university. Interns may also be eligible to receive academic credit at their college or university for participating in the program.
Qualifications: Successful applicants must be U.S. citizens or permitted to work in the U.S. They must be currently or recently enrolled in college full-time when applying to the program and should demonstrate interest in public service, governance, and policy-making process.
Coro Kansas City – Summer Internship in Public Affairs
The Summer Internship in Public Affairs is a full-time, ten-week summer program, whose purpose is to develop future community leaders through exposure to community issues, skill development, civic leaders and organizations. The program is demanding, full-time, and requires an interest in public affairs. Each intern is assigned a brief, individual internship in business, government, labor, media, or non-profit organizations. Preferential consideration is given to applicants from the Greater Kansas City area or to those who intend to include Kansas City in their future plans. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply. Twelve interns are selected every summer. Interns receive a stipend.
Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center
The Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center has a new Leadership Program for women, preparing them for leadership roles in politics, policy, and governance. This is a no-cost one-week session covering public speaking, coalition building, networking, advocacy, and running for office, open to college women from Maine or attending college in Maine. Applications are due mid to late March.

Organization of Chinese Americans
The OCA Internship Program also exposes interns to other aspects of D.C. Last year, intern visits included Congressional offices, where interns met with Representatives, APA staffers, and members of the Congressional APA Caucus. They also met with members of the Department of Justice and discussed issues concerning civil rights and voting rights. Interns will have a lot of hands on experience at the offices in which they are placed. The OCA internships are a great way for student leaders to learn about OCA, current issues facing Asian Pacific Americans, and while experiencing the day-to-day activities of an internet company.
This program is jointly sponsored by Harvard and NYU law schools and Advantage Testing service. It is specifically for “talented and motivated college students of modest means whose racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds are underrepresented in America’s top-rated JD programs” to help them gain admission to leading law schools. It is a 5-week program that covers food, housing, and transportation and gives participants a $3k stipend. Deadline is at the end of February.
The Washington Center – Federal Diversity Internship Initiative
The Washington Center coordinates a program for a number of Federal Agencies, ranging from the Federal Aviation Administration to the EPA, Treasury, Census and National Archives. Interns work full 40-hour weeks and receive direction from a mentor at the federal agency.
Qualifications: Students must be a U.S. Citizen and have at least a 3.0 GPA.
Women’s Research and Education Institute (WREI)
The Women’s Research and Education Institute (WREI) is a non-profit and non-partisan organization that provides information and analyses on issues of concern to women, policy makers, and others interested in women’s issues. WREI offers unpaid internships to current undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of college. Interns assist WREI staff on various projects. Depending on the time of the year and what projects are on the “front burner,” interns may help organize Capitol Hill briefings and conferences on key issues, prepare fact sheets on various topics, assist with preparations for fundraising events, and represent WREI at Washington-area seminars and other events.
