Funded Internship Programs
Would you like to get paid for an unpaid internship? Thanks to the generosity of many donors, Bowdoin is able to offer paid internship grants and fellowships for students to pursue work experiences that would otherwise not be paid. The grants and fellowships provide a terrific opportunity for you to develop valuable experience and skills in career areas of interest to you.

Davis Projects for Peace invites all students to design grassroots projects that you can implement during the summer that advance world peace. The two Bowdoin student projects judged to be the most promising will be submitted to the Davis Project. Winners receive $10,000 to implement their project. Global Citizens Grants provides students with the opportunity to pursue summer volunteer and public service projects outside of the United States. Grants of $2,500 will cover the costs of travel and living expenses for four to twelve weeks. This grant is administered by the McKeen Center for the Common Good and is open to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students only. The application deadline for summer of 2013 is Friday, February 1, 2013. There is only one deadline this year, though students who will be studying abroad spring semester can apply first semester in special circumstances.
Community Matters in Maine Fellowships offers fellowships in environmental studies and public service with placements in non-profit organizations located in Midcoast Maine. These ten-week fellowships include a $4,000 stipend and are administered by Environmental Studies and the McKeen Center for the Common Good. Fellows are eligible for on-campus housing. Preference is given to 2nd and 3rd year students. The application deadline for summer of 2013 is Monday, February 15, 2013.
The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship aims to achieve its mission by identifying and supporting qualified students of great promise and helping them to become scholars of the highest distinction. To accomplish this objective, the program provides fellows with faculty mentoring, financial support to conduct a research project, a supportive network of peers and professionals, and the opportunity to participate in activities aimed at deepening their understanding and commitment to professional academic work. The application deadline for summer of 2013 is February 18, 2013, 12:00 p.m.
Psi Upsilon Sustainability and Environmental Justice Fellowship offers students the opportunity to work with agencies, organizations or businesses in exploring the topics of sustainability and environmental justices. These 10 week fellowships include a $4,000 stipend and are administered by the Environmental Studies Program. The application deadline for summer of 2013 is February, 15, 2013, 12:00 p.m.
Bowdoin Scientific Station (BSS) summer fellowship supports undergraduate field research in the natural sciences and artistic endeavors (broadly defined) at BSS, Bowdoin College’s research station on Kent Island. Eight fellowships are available each summer. The fellowship program lasts approximately 8 weeks, beginning on Memorial Day and provides a stipend, room & board at the research station, travel, and research/art supplies. The application deadline for summer of 2013 February 23, 2013, 12:00 p.m.
Preston Public Interest Career Fund (PPICF) requires you to work for an organization that serves the needs of the underserved or disadvantaged. You must have secured an internship with an organization in order to apply. This grant is open to all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students. The stipend is $4000. Nikuradse-Matthews Summer Public Interest Fellowship requires that you work for an organization that serves the needs of the underprivileged. You must have a notable project that you will work on. The stipend is $4000 for the summer. This grant is open to all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students. The Thomas Andrew McKinley ’06 Entrepreneur Grant Fund allows you to pursue significant entrepreneurial experiences or community service projects of your own design, anywhere in the world. The grant for the summer experience will cover a stipend and all related costs up to a total of $5,000. This grant is open to 2nd and 3rd year students. Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund encourages students to pursue summer internships that will develop business skills and increase their exposure to the business world. Award amounts will be based on the employer’s ability to provide partial remuneration with the combined total not to exceed $5,000. This grant is open to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students. Richard B. ’62 and Sabra Ladd Government Internship is designed for a current student pursuing an unpaid summer internship in the U.S. government or a national public policy institute. The grant will cover expenses up to $5,000. The Anwarul Quadir Fellowship promotes understanding of the economic and social progress in Bangladesh and the role that entrepreneurship and business plays in this progress. The Fellowship is administered by Career Planning and will support an internship at a business in apparel manufacturing, telecommunications, banking, pharmaceutical, ceramics, software, food production and other growing industries in Bangladesh. Bowdoin College Alumni Council Internship Fund is designed to allow a student to take an unpaid internship to explore or gain greater knowledge in a career field of their choice. The application deadline for summer of 2013 is Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 12:00 pm.
Delta Sigma Arts Fellowship is designed to support unpaid internships in the arts. Its goal is to allow students to be as closely involved in the creative process as possible. It is open to all creative disciplines. The stipend is $5,000 for the summer. The 2013 application deadline is Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 12:00 p.m.
Strong/Gault Social Advancement Internship Grant provides support for Bowdoin students to pursue internship experiences within for-profit and nonprofit organizations, as well as federal and local government agencies that serve economically underdeveloped areas by providing services and innovative programs that benefit a particular community, region, or society at large. The application deadline for summer of 2013 is Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 12:00 p.m.
